1) Tuition Assistance (TA)

Active-duty members may receive Tuition Assistance (TA) for off-duty college courses. Each service sets its own policies.

Action steps:

  1. Visit your branch education office portal.
  2. Check annual caps and course eligibility.
  3. Submit command approval requests early.

2) GI Bill Programs

Post-9/11 GI Bill®

  • Covers tuition/fees (capped for private), housing allowance (BAH-like), and books stipend.
  • Tiered 50–100% by qualifying service time; more service = higher benefit.
  • Monthly housing allowance is based on E-5 w/dependents for school ZIP, prorated by enrollment.
  • Books stipend is paid annually, up to $1,000.
  • Yellow Ribbon: Participating schools may cover tuition gaps (private or out-of-state).
  • Can be used for undergraduate, graduate, vocational, and some licensing/certification tests.
VA: Post-9/11 GI Bill

Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB)

  • Provides fixed monthly payments directly to the student.
  • Requires $1,200 buy-in during first year of service.
  • Can be used for degree, certificate, correspondence, apprenticeship, and flight training programs.
  • Election is irrevocable—compare with Post-9/11 GI Bill before choosing.
  • Benefits expire 10 years after last separation from active duty.

Transfer of Benefits

  • Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits may be transferred to spouse or children with DoD approval.
  • Requires additional service commitment (typically 4 years from date of transfer request).
  • Transfer must be completed while still serving; cannot be done after separation.
  • Dependents must be enrolled in DEERS and designated in milConnect.
  • Rules and eligibility can change—check with your branch and VA before planning.
